Work from 2015-2016

Captured

Captured

Watercolor, oil pastel, printing ink, pencil on paper 30.4cm x 22.8cm This piece is about being captured in society's stereotypes and trying to be unique and true to yourself even though some people will try to hold you back. I used sharp lines with oil pastels to show who the whale really is but the black net is preventing him from being who himself.

Brave

Brave

Acrylics 76.20cm x 101.60cm I chose a breaching whale for this piece because it shows a great amount of vulnerability; when a whale breaches it becomes exposed to humans and draws a lot of attention to itself. I used the texture of the “splatter technique” to create the splash and show the control the whale has over the water. I made the decision to put the lower and middle section of the body in the center to show the strength of the whale.

Maternal Bond

Maternal Bond

Oil paint on canvas 51cm x 40.3cm Here I placed the mother under the child holding it up to represent how important parental support is. I have the child's body bending around the mother's head to express the bond that they have. I have been studying attachment disorders in Romanian orphans and have grown to understand how important the bond between mother and child it and how much it affects development.

Loyalty

Loyalty

Oil paint on canvas in a purchased frame 29.5cm x 24.3cm Everyone has friends, but finding a loyal friend isn't always easy. In this piece one whale has its fin on the others back to portray the saying “I got your back”. I modeled the whales after a small whale toy and just shifted its position. My goal was to do a more formal and simple piece so I did i solid background and put it into a gold frame.

Motivation

Motivation

Spray paint, block printing ink. 214 x 98 cm Motivation. It's something many people lack and when we lack motivation we grow further from success. The definition of motivation is “the reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way” this definition shows that motivation can be positive or negative. For the background I used spray paint and created the lines using tape and paper to create an abstract representation of water.

Obliteration

Obliteration

Oil and sand on canvas 121.92cm x 60.9cm Traditionally people assume that the face is one’s most expressive feature. In this piece I selected the composition to have the whale with its tail closest to us to show how much emotion can be expressed through body language. The whale is dead, but it still has an impact on those who witness it. It’s the story about how the whale got to this point that leaves the viewers to contemplate their own story.

Diversity (Big Blue)

Diversity (Big Blue)

Crafting acrylics 195.58cm x 139.70cm This piece is 20 individually made canvases attached to make one big piece. There is a great amount of diversity in the ocean just like there is on earth and in this piece I want to express the power in numbers and that it takes every fish in the sea to make the ocean what it is.
